The self regulatory feeding plan is still considered the best way to feed your newborn regardless if the baby is fed by breast milk or formula (see the next sections concerning both types of feeding) Your parental judgment and your baby's behavior are usually better indicators of when to feed than relying on a strict schedule.
Feed the baby approximately every 2-5 hours, depending on your baby's wants and behavior. DO NOT awaken the baby for a feeding at night. This relatively simple method is called "self regulatory" because after a few weeks of irregular feedings the baby develops a regular schedule which fits this particular baby best. Most parents find this plan very successful and they also report that their baby stops the night feeding earlier and without difficulty.
Most feedings, whether breast or bottle, should be able to be completed in 20-30 minutes. For specifics of each type of feeding, see the next section in the booklet.
